Things School Never Taught Me: Boundaries, Burnout, and Balance

Pexels Chuotanhls 32893325

“If only the syllabus had ‘How Not to Cry in Office Bathrooms’ as a chapter.”

They taught me trigonometry.

They taught me the Pythagoras theorem.

But not once did anyone mention…

How to say no without guilt

What burnout actually feels like

Or that maintaining balance isn’t about juggling, it’s about dropping the ball sometimes — and being okay with it

📚 What I Thought Adult Life Would Be:

Graduate → Job → Salary → Success

Friends always in touch

Work-life balance

Sleep by 11 PM

Emotional stability?

LOL. Cute.

⚡What It Really Is:

Boundaries? We didn’t even get personal space in our cubicles.

Burnout? Looks like being “productive” even while brushing teeth.

Balance? Trying to fit self-care between Google Calendar reminders.

🔥 Burnout Doesn’t Always Look Like Breaking Down

Sometimes it’s:

Forgetting birthdays of people you love

Answering “How are you?” with “Busy” instead of “Fine”

Losing interest in things you once loved

Feeling like rest is laziness

Crying in washrooms and fixing eyeliner after

It creeps in like a slow software bug you ignore until your system crashes.

🚫 Boundaries No One Taught Me to Set

Not replying to work messages at 11 PM is okay

Saying “I’m not available” doesn’t need a 10-line excuse

“No” is a full sentence

Emotional energy is currency — spend wisely

You don’t have to explain yourself to people who constantly make you feel small

⚖️ Balance Is Not 50:50 — It’s Breathing Room

Balance isn’t giving equal hours to work and life.

It’s…

Stepping away from screen when eyes hurt

Ordering food guilt-free when too tired to cook

Taking naps without labeling it as “unproductive”

Cancelling plans when overwhelmed

Creating more space, not more schedules

💌 My Syllabus (Now, As An Adult):

If I could rewrite my school textbooks, I’d add:

Chapter 1: How to Listen to Your Body

Chapter 4: Recognizing Toxic People

Chapter 7: How to Say “No” Nicely but Firmly

Chapter 10: Rest Is Not a Reward

Bonus Chapter: You Can Change Your Mind. And Your Career. And Your Life.

🌱 Final Thoughts

You’re not weak for feeling tired.

You’re not dramatic for wanting more peace.

And you’re not a failure if your graph isn’t going up every month.

You’re learning things school never prepared you for.

That makes you strong.

That makes you real.

Now close that “urgent” tab, breathe, and drink some water.
