“If Lavender Candles Aren’t Working… Try This”
Anxiety doesn’t always show up with a warning.
Sometimes it’s a loud storm, other times it’s a quiet, tight knot in your chest that won’t leave — no matter how many deep breaths you take or lavender candles you light. 🕯️
We live in a world that’s always on, always scrolling, always demanding — and anxiety has become the uninvited roommate in most of our minds.
Now, I’m not a therapist, nor am I claiming these are miracle cures. But after years of riding the anxiety rollercoaster 🎢, I’ve discovered some weird, unconventional, and surprisingly effective tricks that have actually worked — for me and many others.
So if deep breathing and journaling just aren’t cutting it anymore… let’s try something a little weird, shall we? 😌
💡 Why Weird Hacks Work
When your brain is overwhelmed, your nervous system needs a pattern interrupt — something that instantly snaps it out of its spiral.
That’s where weird works. Because it’s unexpected, engaging, and often silly enough to shake off the panic fog.
So let’s get into it. Here are my top 5:
🧺 1. Do Laundry (Yes, Really)
Look, I hate chores. But when anxiety hits hard, something magical happens when I start folding clothes or matching socks.
Why it works:
- The repetitive motion calms your nervous system
- The smell of clean clothes can ground your senses
- It gives you a sense of control when your mind feels chaotic
Bonus: You also get clean clothes. Productivity + therapy = win-win.
🧠 Brain Trick: Folding warm towels actually mimics the sensation of comfort and safety. It’s like hugging order into your life.
🦷 2. Brush Your Teeth with Ice-Cold Water
Sounds weird, feels weird, but wow, does it reset your headspace.
Why it works:
- Cold water shocks your system and forces your brain to pause
- Mint toothpaste adds a sensory jolt that disrupts anxious thought loops
- It’s short, simple, and you feel fresher instantly
This works especially well if you’re spiraling late at night. It’s like hitting a mini-refresh button on your brain.
🧠 Brain Trick: It engages multiple senses at once — taste, touch, temperature — anchoring you in the now.
🕺 3. Cringe-Dance to 2000s Songs Like Nobody’s Watching
This is my personal favorite.
When my heart is racing and my thoughts are spinning, I blast old-school Bollywood or 2000s pop and just move.
Why it works:
- Movement releases endorphins (happy chemicals!)
- Music hijacks your mental loop
- Cringe-factor lets you stop taking yourself so seriously
My go-to playlist includes:
🎶 “It’s My Life” – Bon Jovi
🎶 “Kajra Re” – the drama we all need
🎶 “Sheila Ki Jawani” – don’t judge me, it works
🧠 Brain Trick: Movement + music overrides panic signals with joy (and a little laughter).
✍️ 4. Write a To-Do List… For Future You (3 Years Later)
Forget tomorrow.
Close your eyes and imagine yourself three years from now. Where are you? Who are you with? What do you want to do that day?
Then, write a full to-do list for that version of you.
Why it works:
- Redirects your brain from panic ➡ possibility
- Pulls you out of survival mode and into imagination
- Gives you a break from the “what if” and replaces it with “what could be”
Example:
📝 Future Me’s To-Do List (2028):
- Take morning walk with golden retriever
- Water balcony plants
- Work on second novel draft
- Host Friday dinner for friends
- Read 20 pages of a mystery thriller
- Bake banana bread
🧠 Brain Trick: You’re still writing a list (your anxious brain loves lists), but you’re fueling hope instead of fear.
🧊 5. Dip Your Face in Ice-Cold Water for 30 Seconds
This one’s for the brave.
If you’re in the middle of a full-blown panic attack, grab a bowl of ice water, hold your breath, and dunk your face in it for 20–30 seconds.
Why it works:
- It triggers the diver’s reflex, slowing your heart rate
- Gives your system an emergency reset
- Forces immediate shift from panic mode to survival mode
Warning: You’ll feel like a human popsicle.
Bonus: You’ll look ridiculous — which makes you laugh — which also helps.
🧠 Brain Trick: It gives your body something so intense to focus on that the anxiety has to take a back seat.
🧘♀️ Bonus: The “What’s Around Me” Grounding Trick (The Sneaky Classic)
This one is subtle, so you can do it in public without anyone noticing.
🔹 Name 5 things you can see
🔹 Name 4 things you can touch
🔹 Name 3 things you can hear
🔹 Name 2 things you can smell
🔹 Name 1 thing you can taste
This sensory reset never fails — and doesn’t require any props or freezing water.
🧠 Brain Trick: It grounds you in the present. Panic comes from future fear — this trick pulls you back to now.
🤯 But Will These Work for Me?
Maybe. Maybe not.
Everyone’s brain is wired differently.
But what I do know is — these “weird hacks” have helped hundreds of people feel just a little better, just when they needed it most.
They’re simple.
They’re free.
And sometimes, they’re so ridiculous, they make you laugh — and that’s a win too.
💬 Don’t Judge Your Coping Mechanisms
Anxiety is messy.
There is no perfect way to fix it.
Sometimes you need therapy, medication, or professional help — and that’s 100% okay and powerful.
But on the in-between days — the ones where your brain feels heavy and you just want a little peace — try something weird. Something gentle. Something that makes your brain pause and say:
“Wait… what?”
That moment of pause is everything.
