1.How I Started My Business with an Idea, a Laptop, and Zero Clue

Spoiler Alert: I had no business degree, no funding, and absolutely no idea what I was doing. But I started anyway.

Let me take you back to where it all began.

Coffee, Chaos & a Question That Changed Everything

I was sitting in a noisy café, watching people rush to work. Me? I had just quit my job.

No backup plan. Just one burning question in my head:

“What if I just start my own thing?”

It wasn’t a grand moment. It was messy and terrifying. But something told me — this was the start of something real.

From Blank Google Docs to Business Plans

I opened my laptop and stared at a blank document.

It read: “Business Plan”…and stayed blank for hours.

I googled everything  “how to start a business,” “do I need an LLC?” “how to make money online.” Every click led to another rabbit hole. But slowly, the fog cleared. I started writing down:

  • What I was good at
  • What people needed
  • What I could offer that felt different

That’s where the idea for my service-based business was born.

Step by Step, Even If It’s Crooked

Forget perfection. I just wanted progress.

  • I registered my domain (after 4 hours of name hunting).
  • Set up a basic website using a free template.
  • Offered my service to one client.

That first client paid $50. It wasn’t about the money it was proof that someone, somewhere, believed in what I was doing.

And that was everything.

Lessons I Wish I Knew on Day One

Now that I’ve made it past the messy beginning, here’s what I wish I’d known:

1. Start before you’re ready

You’ll never feel “prepared.” Start anyway.

2. Keep it simple

Fancy logos and perfect branding can wait. Focus on solving a real problem.

3. Talk to people

Your best marketing tool is conversation. Listen more than you speak.

4. Imperfect action beats perfect ideas

You learn more in 1 week of doing than in 6 months of planning.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

Today, that tiny idea has grown into a business I’m proud of. No, I still don’t know everything. But I’ve learned to figure things out as I go.

If you’re sitting where I was — full of doubt but with a spark of belief here’s my advice:

Don’t wait. Just start.

You don’t need all the answers. You just need to take the first step.

Ready to start your business journey?

I did it with a laptop and zero clue and you can too.
